RU AT CASITA MARIA CENTER FOR ARTS AND EDUCATION RESIDENCY in NYC

This open call is reserved for New York based artists exclusively for two consecutive 3 month residencies between July 2013 and March 2014. A panel of curatorial staff at RU and Casita Maria will select the finalists. A stipend of $700 will be offered to the selected artists with the generous support of the American Chai Trust.

For the 3rd consecutive year, Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education and Residency Unlimited (RU) are renewing their partnership to create a community-based residency program that is based between Casita Maria’s state of the art facility in the South Bronx, NY and  Residency Unlimited’s space in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. We are looking to work with artists for whom audience or community participation plays a major role in their practice and who will work alongside Bronx-based youth and their families as they develop their new project.
What does this residency provide?
A two-fold experience with 2 vibrant organizations putting their resources together to present and disseminate the creative product to a broad range of audiences.
A studio space for 3 months starting July 1 at Casita Maria free of charge. Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education is a nonprofit community-based organization and home to the Bronx Studio School for Writer and Artists (a NYC 6th – 12th grade public school). The resident artist can work closely with the young students served by the organization.
From its event space based at 360 Court Street in Brooklyn, Residency Unlimited (RU) will provide the selected artist with customized logistical support, enhanced networking opportunities and access to its general programming within the context of the international residency program. A public presentation of the new work developed will be organized in a format to be determined in conjunction with the artist and the RU staff.
What are the criteria for selection?
Besides quality of the artist’s work, the core criterion is the artist’s willingness to work with the communities of which Casita Maria as well as engage with the RU community and attend events.
The studio space at Casita Maria will typically be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm each week-day. In addition, occasional weekends and evenings will be made available.
Eligible applicants must be able to commit to spending 25 hours of time @ Casita Maria per month, with the purpose of executing a selected project.
