Converting RU into a low budget film studio for NYC based artists.

Special Features 2014 is a film production program designed to support the creation of short films and videos by New York City based artists.
Selected applicants will have the opportunity to use RU’s Carroll Gardens unique church space setting as the backdrop to produce a new film or video with the support of RU’s production resources.
Between March and June 2014, 4 selected artists will participate in RU’s residency program for 1 month each.

http://www.residencyunlimited.org/news/2014/02/special-features-2014-open-call/

A public screening showcasing their work will take place at RU at the end of June 2014.
The title, “Special Features”, refers to the additional material featured on DVD film releases.
This material highlights aspects essential to the realization of film (e.g. deleted scenes, interviews, and production reels).
RU’s tailored residency approach to the creative process is akin to the role of film production whereby filmmakers spend a large portion of time and energy in the planning and execution of their projects, ensuring that logistics run smoothly from start to finish.
It requires flexibility, the ability to adapt and overcome challenges.
The commonalities that can be found in both a RU residency and film-making highlight the making of process.

RU launched the first edition of Special Features in 2010 by converting an art gallery in Lower East Side into a low cost film studio and inviting 12 local artists to create a compelling piece over the course of  one day each.

You can view the resulting works and process here.
By participating in Special Features, you will receive:
  • $500 Artist/Production Stipend
  • Organizational and critical meetings with RU’s curatorial and technical staff to determine a production plan for the duration of the residency.
  • On hand assistance by RU’s staff during the production and post-production phase of the project.
  • Access to material resources (i.e. film equipment, Material for the Arts, etc..)
  • For 1 month from March through June 2014, 4 selected artists will be part of RU’s international residency program and benefit from ongoing assistance.
  • A final screening of your work will be held at RU end of June, 2014
  • Works will be featured on RU’s website, alongside works from Special Features 2010.
Eligibility
  • You must be a New York City resident.
  • Artists working in all mediums can submit a film/video based project proposal.
  • Final work must be no longer than 10 mins.
Deadline: Monday February 24th, 2014 (Selection results March 1st, 2014)

This program is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature

KRAN FILM RESIDENT
In October and November 2013, KRAN Film is organising in Brussels two residencies for cultural operators, with a particular interest in independent, non-commercial video art and art films. During the period of 10 days, each resident will have the opportunity to visit Flemish film and video archives (Argos, VAF, Cinematek, Plus-tot te laat, Cinema Nova, Auguste Orts, 68septante, Kran Film); meet Flemish film makers and film professionals; deliver a lecture, debate or presentation at the RITS School of Arts; and present a screening programme at Beursschouwburg.

In total, two residents will be selected - one for the October and another for the November residency.

The residency offers travel costs to Brussels (return ticket - limited amount), accommodation, per diems, fee and a small budget for screening rights costs.

eligibility
This call is addressed to international programmers, programme managers, curators and film experts with an interest in independent film and video art, who are working worldwide in the institutional or non-governmental sector, including PhD researchers. The call excludes the commercial film sector. Residents who do not live and work in Belgium may apply to the call. The applicant should send a CV and a short motivation letter. The motivation letter should clearly state how the resident will benefit from the residency programme and his/her vision of the implementation of gained experiences in the resident's future career.

focus
The residency is organised around different themes that Kran Film, together with its partners and residents, would like to examine in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 we will be specifically exploring following themes:
1) labour (October residency), and
2) gender (November residency).

Please read the context on the bottom of the document for more information.

The applicant selects one of the focus themes
to further explore within the residency
(either labour or gender).
The applicant submits a CV and a motivation letter.
The motivation letter may not exceed 700 words.

Within the motivation letter, the applicant:
a) clarifies his/her experiences and interests in the residency, and selected theme;
b) proposes film artists he/she wishes to meet up with;
c) proposes a (draft for the) lecture/debate/presentation; and
d) proposes a (draft for the) screening programme.

Both the lecture/debate/presentation and the screening programme should be developed around the selected theme.

2) The applicant who wishes to further explore the theme of Gender should apply by 24th September, 2013.
It is possible to apply for both residencies, although accepted applicants can only receive one residency.

Applications may be submitted online via the following e-mail address: resident@kranfilm.net

or via post mail service to:
Kran Film (residency)
Aalststraat 7-11
Suite A3.1
Belgium – Brussels 1000

Phone +32 (0) 495360586

The selection committee consists of representatives from Beursschouwburg Brussels, the RITS School of Arts, BAMart, Argos and KRAN Film Collective. The selection committee will gather twice to choose two residents in total for the residency programme in 2013. Results will be announced a few days after the deadlines.

The October residency will be held from 18th and 27th October 2013.
The November residency will be held from 13th and 22nd November 2013.

residency structure
The resident will be visiting Flemish film and video archives that will preselect films for the resident's visit in accordance to the residency theme. Meetings with filmmakers and other film professionals may also be organized on the resident's request.

The resident will deliver a lecture or a debate or a presentation at the RITS School of Arts in Brussels. The lecture/debate/presentation is to be developed around the chosen theme (labour / gender) and will take film as an analytical device. This event will be organised for the students, film professionals and film fondlers at the RITS School of Arts.

The resident will prepare a screening programme to be developed around the chosen theme (already presented with the motivation letter). It is highly recommended that the resident includes at least one film from the Flemish film or video archives he or she will visit during the residency period. This event will take place in Beursschouwburg, Brussels, at the end of the residency period. Screening programmes will take place on 26th October for the first residency (labour) and 21st November for the second (gender).

Language
English is the official language of the residency.
If the language of the films on the screening programme is not English, the film should have English or Dutch subtitles.

Context
In 2013 and 2014 KRAN Film residency programme aims to explore the notion of a relational citizenship. The programme is concerned with stereotypes about identities that persist in Europe despite the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and increased migrations. Instead of uniting in its diversity, Europe is dividing along ethnic, religious or gender borders. It is in this regard that the forms of living together in migrating Europe have to be challenged. Examining these circumstances, the residency wishes to raise questions of citizenship in a multinational and multiethnic society, about neo-liberalism, migrations, populism, de-colonialism, gender, ethics and the like. Eurocentric and multipolar order, as well as contingent and precarious identities are to be examined.

In 2013 we will be discussing two themes: labour in October and gender in November.

Labour – Today, when multinationals seek out cheap labour and focus on export regardless of local needs, advanced economies face growing unemployment and developing countries suffer from a lack of adequate market access. It is in this light that we want to envisage the ethical issues regarding labour and economy as they encourage nationalism, migration and poverty.

Gender – Judith Butler comes to terms with the use of an ontology of sexual difference as a justification for norms of gendered behaviour. For her, the body 'has no ontological status apart from the various acts which constitute its reality' and it is considered to be contingent and discoursivly constructed. This is the position from which we argue freedom for all, equal treatment of all differences, and acknowledgment of multiplicity of subject positions.

Kran Film Collective is a Brussels and Copenhagen based network of international visual artists and film makers from outside the traditional realm of filmmaking. Kran Film is engaged in a critical approach to society we live in through film and video art.

In partnership with Beursschouwburg, BAMart, RITS School of Arts, VAF, Argos, Cinematek, Plus-tot te laat, 68septante

MacArthur Foundation 2013 Documentary Film Open Call

The MacArthur Foundation's Media Program supports the production of documentary films that illuminate human stories within complex social issues. These issues are often critical to our lives, but under-reported in other media. We especially look to fund projects designed to reach a broad audience, particularly in the U.S., through public television broadcast, via community and policymaker screenings, and online.

Each year we accept funding applications through an Open Call process. We typically receive about 400 applications and select 8 - 12 films to receive a grant. Grants are made to production companies and non-profit organizations that are based in the U.S. The typical grant amount is between $50,000 and $200,000.

Over the last 30 years, we have supported over 200 films by some of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers in the country. Their documentary work combines exceptional storytelling with in-depth journalism. Our goal is to support documentaries that will be used widely in educational, community, and policy-making settings over many years, sparking conversations and activities that contribute to social and policy change.

OPEN CALL: EMPAC DANCE MOViES COMMISSION 2013-14

Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) @ Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is excited to announce the 2013-2014 DANCE MOViES Commission. This is an open call for artists, choreographers, dancers, and filmmakers working in the genre of dance for the screen.
The deadline for the proposals is February 15, 2013.

The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), founded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is dedicated to work which explores the integration of technology, media and the performing arts. Through the DANCE MOViES Commission, EMPAC aims to support and encourage the development of the genre of dance film and video in the Americas.
You can find more information about previous commissioned projects and EMPAC at empac.rpi.edu/events/2013/spring/dmc. To read more on the background and context of the DANCE MOViES Commissions, please visit the EMPAC website. For more information about the application process, please download the PROGRAM GUIDELINES PDF (online).

To apply go to: applications.empac.rpi.edu/postings/dance_movies_commission_2013

Type of Work Supported

The EMPAC DANCE MOViES Commission supports the creation of new works for the screen which vary widely in content and form, yet are united by the fact that the image on the screen was crafted by, or in collaboration with, a choreographer or movement-based artist. The works supported combine the possibilities and range of the moving image in all its technological facets with the physicality and movement-based modes of dance. Examples of works supported by the commission may include films that are narrative-driven, using the conventions of filmic story-telling; some may be abstract works which explore the inherent sympathies between the time-based, visual aspects of both dance and film; some may not even feature “dance” as is generally defined, but contain a powerful sense of how movement unfurls in time and how we create meaning from the dance of images; some may take advantage of tools such as computer processing, motion capture, simulation, animation, and image processing.

Video Project: Le TGV en 50 secondes

The project of this video demonstration is a homage to the Lumière brothers and the recognition of the fundamental role which the train had and has in the development of the voyage.
We are sure that “L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, a short of 50 seconds, was the first art film in the history. In its brevity, it takes on the cinematographic language and attests the social development in the sense of modernity, interpreted as freedom of collective and fast voyage.
CO.AR.CO. will dedicate its activity of the cultural season 2012 at the realization of an artists’ video collection on the topic of the TGV. The videos, just like the original film of the Lumière brothers “L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, have a length of 50 seconds (+ generic titles) developing the subject of a travel by train.

FLAMIN Productions Film Commissions, London

FLAMIN Productions Commissions, London

A major commissioning scheme for London’s artist film-makers.
Deadline: 5 December, 2012
Application fee: none

Film London and Arts Council England present FLAMIN Productions, a major commissioning scheme for London’s artist film-makers. Part of Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network, FLAMIN Productions aims to support the most exciting, innovative and challenging moving image projects with production finance and bespoke mentoring opportunities.
FLAMIN Productions is the only scheme of its kind in the UK. It commissions new, single screen works that are ambitious in premise and duration, with an emphasis on projects that have strong potential to reach audiences through gallery exhibition and screenings.

Over the period 2011/12 to 2014/15, FLAMIN Productions will be investing £360,000 of production funding with awards of between £20,000 to £50,000 available. This is the second call for applications. In this round up to 5 projects will be shortlisted and invited to develop their ideas for resubmission as full production tenders. Projects will then be reassessed for production funding.
