Glacier National Park (MT), Call for Applicants: Artist-in-Residence 2016

The Artist-in-Residence Program at Glacier National Park offers professional artists four weeks of uninterrupted time to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. The artist will also present several public programs in the park during their residency to share their experience and their art with park visitors. In celebration of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial the Glacier Artist-in-Residence program is seeking professional artists whose work reflects upon the past 100 years and/or looks forward to the future of our national parks. Benefit to Glacier National Park: The artist will present several public programs during their residency. This program must be related to their experience as the artist-in-residence. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. Upon returning home the artist is encouraged to also present one public program to share the experience with their local community. This program should focus on their experience as the artist-in-residence and its influence on their personal enrichment

The artist will provide digital images of selected work to the park within six months of the completing the residency. The images should represent their experience as the artist-in-residence. The park has the right to use those digital images in park publications, websites and presentations for education and outreach.

General Information: Glacier National Park is located in Northwest Montana. The artist will be located on the west side of the park. The nearest town is West Glacier, MT which is a small town located just outside the park. Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Kalispell are larger towns located about 30-40 minutes from the park and will provide the artist with most all necessary amenities. The artist will have limited access to cell phone service and internet is not provided in the house. Wifi service is available at several locations both inside and outside the park. Artists should be self-sufficient and provide all of their necessary art supplies. Artist must provide their own transportation. Entry fee: $20.

Housing:  The artists selected for June, July and September will be given rent-free use of a furnished cabin on the shores of Lake McDonald. This cabin is rustic with no cell phone service or internet. The artist selected for October will be given rent-free use of a furnished house in the park headquarters located in West Glacier. Basic cooking equipment and bedding is provided. This housing is only available for the artist. Family members, significant others and friends will not be allowed to stay with the artist in the house.

Collaborating Artists:  Up to three artists may apply under one application if their proposed project is a collaboration of several artistic disciplines. The artists will be housed together and will need to be able to live and work in close proximity to each other.
