OPEN CALL FOR ENTRIES: Flatlanders & Surface Dwellers

Flatlanders & Surface Dwellers is a group exhibition featuring diverse visual art media that explore the intimate and exotic realm of surface texture that evokes visceral, multi-sensory responses. Throughout the history of art making, the artist’s relationship with surface has been a serious consideration. Renaissance artists, striving for illusion, expected the viewer to ignore the surface. Modernists embraced the surface and made it a primary consideration. Postmodernity does whatever it feels like with surface. Now, the digital revolution has allowed viewers to “interact with” the surfaces of gadgets; but still, an illusion is all that is ultimately permitted. This leaves the curious soul of the viewer with the desire to touch, connect, cut, penetrate, peel away and expose layers. As artists, we are aware that surface is ours to manipulate, whether it is a mask of superficiality, a final layer of honesty or a cloak of mystery. The book Flatland, written in 1884, is loosely referenced in the exhibition, as it provides a philosophical look at a two-dimensional world, exploring abstract concepts of shape, line and point, and highlighting “a world within the surface.” This exhibition is curated by guest curator Lea Anderson, and artists are selected by both invitation and this call for submissions.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to emerging and established contemporary artists working in all visual media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, fine craft, installation, digital media and video. Artists of diverse cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Open to all visual artists at least 18 years or older. New works and/or installations are highly encouraged, and artworks proposed must have been created within the last four years. Proposed artworks will be considered within the theme of the exhibition, and must not have been previously shown in Albuquerque or the surrounding region.

INSURANCE, HANDLING, SHIPPING & SALES

All work is handled by professional staff with the utmost care. Work is fully insured while at 516 ARTS. Please note that artists are responsible for covering partial cost of shipping (if needed). Work in the exhibition may be for sale or on loan from collections. If work is for sale, 516 ARTS retains the industry standard gallery commission of 50%, but we can make special arrangements with artists’ galleries if needed. If work is on loan, collectors can be credited in labels and publications.

EXHIBITION PROGRAMS & PUBLICATIONS

516 ARTS will host and/or collaborate on a series of events during the exhibition, which may include panel discussions, artists’ talks, poetry, films or performances. Emmanuel College Artist in Residence

The Emmanuel College Art Department offers an eight-week artists residency to four artists each summer. The residency supports a diverse group of artists, providing time and space for established and emerging artists to develop their work.

However, the Art Department specifically aims to award a residency to one individual from each of the four categories: ceramics, photography, printmaking and social justice. The stipend for a one-year predoctoral fellowship is $30,000, plus research and travel allowances. The stipend for a senior or postdoctoral fellowship is $45,000, plus research and travel allowances. 2013 LONDON PALESTINE FILM FESTIVAL

The PFF is now planning the 2013 Festival, along with the Pre-Festival Season and 2013 Art Exhibition. We aim to build on the success of 2012, which saw the largest Festival audiences yet engage with 60 works at more than 20 screen events.

The Pre-Festival Season will launch in early April and run for three weeks. The 2013 LPFF will then open on Friday May 3rd with a Gala Premiere Event at the Barbican Cinema, proceeding with daily screenings, talks, and workshops for two weeks.

To submit work for the 2013 LPFF and Pre-Festval Season, please download two documents at the foot of this page and follow the guidelines within. When submitting, do read the terms of submission, and never submit irreplaceable material.

Getting Rejected: The Hard Truth About Applying for Grants

If you apply for a grant, residency or fellowship the truth is you're probably going to get rejected. Deal with it.

This is a partial list of things I applied for in 2009. As you can see I was rejected by most of them. And this is after I had several well known grants and fellowships under my belt. The reality is that you are likely to be successful in no more than about ten percent of your applications. And that's if you are lucky. So if you plan on just applying for the one grant or residency you have your heart set on be prepared to be disappointed.

This is why I advise taking a more holistic approach to your applications. First decide on a project or a place that you want to go. For example I have focused on Europe for my ongoing project, The Europeans. Just about everything I apply from from residencies to exhibition opportunities is related to this project. I was also lucky enough to have a very broad project that allows me to apply for lots of different things in lots of different places.

Having a project in mind gives you the freedom to apply to many different sources for funding. If you want to make wood sculptures you can do that in France or in California, right? Most grant giving organizations also want you to be as specific as possible with what you will do with the opportunity they will give you.

Having a location in mind can also help. If you've always wanted to go to Japan then apply for every residency or fellowship you can get your hands on that meets your criteria. You might want to apply for the big one in Tokyo but you might end up getting the smaller one in Yokohama. Big grants and fellowships get lots of applications, sometimes thousands. Smaller places get fewer, giving you a better shot. But if you only apply for one you hurt your chances.

Getting a grant isn't just about luck or odds; the quality of your work and your proposal play important roles as well. But why not give yourself every chance at being successful? Yes, applying for lots of grants can be time consuming but once you've been doing for a while it gets easier. At the same time your are asking for "free" money or a place to stay so why shouldn't you put a few hours into an application that can result in weeks or months of creative freedom?

ISIS Arts & Newcastle Gateshead Initiative Research Residency

Visual and Media artists, UK and beyond, are invited to apply for a three-week research residency, a joint collaboration between ISIS Arts and NGI (Newcastle Gateshead Initiative), Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK), to take place between February and end of April 2013.

The residencies are open to regional, national and international artists working in the field of visual and media art with a particular interest (but not limited to) the use of technologies and digital media in the creation of artworks.

We are particularly interested in receiving proposals from artists who visualise data as a part of their practise. The artist will gain access to NGI’s Dashboard of statistics and data – encompassing information gathered in relation to the destination of NewcastleGateshead (including perceptions, partner organisation statistics, and website and visitor information) as well as NewcastleGateshead Initiative organisational data. The artist would work alongside the Culture Team and Research Team.

This is an opportunity for artists to spend time in a self-contained city centre studio space to research a new project or idea without the constraints of having to necessarily produce a body of work; the emphasis for this residency is on research not on finished art works.

There is a bursary of £1200 for the minimum of a three-week period (to include all materials, travel and accommodation costs). Artists may apply individually or as part of a group (however the award per residency will not change).

All artists will have access to ISIS equipment, critical support and introductions to arts networks in the region. The artist is expected to be mostly self-reliant and familiar with the media they want to use.

All artists are expected to present their work at ISIS as part of an artist talk event.

UAMO Art Festival in Munich 2013

The international and interdisciplinary UAMO ART FESTIVAL takes place in Munich since 2004 and annually offers more than 50 artists from around the world a platform for their works.

The festival's theme to which the artists can present their works varies each year. Recent themes have been " Ultra Social" (2011) or "Konsens - Nonsens" (2010).

2012/13 the theme is "PLAY TIME".

Urban Art and Media Organisation

Art Moves Africa (AMA) aims to facilitate cultural and artistic exchanges within the African continent. AMA offers travel funds to artists, arts professionals and cultural operators living and working in Africa to travel within the continent in order to engage in the exchange of information, the enhancement of skills, the development of informal networks and the pursuit of cooperation.
