What to Expect from an Artist in Residency Program

So you're thinking of applying for an artist in residency program and you don't know what to expect. I will walk you through some of what I've experienced over the years.

There are lots of different kinds artist in residency programs (AIR) around the world but they tend to fall into one of three categories.

The Glorified Hotel or Hostel

These residencies require that you pay them a fee to stay there. In exchange they will give you a room and perhaps a workspace and the joy of hanging out with other artists in a hopefully lovely setting. By and large I don't really care for these types of outfits but they can be extremely useful in certain circumstances. Say you are thinking of moving to Italy but have never been there. Doing one of these residencies can be cheaper than staying at a hotel and also offer you a built in community of other artists. If you are just starting out as an artist these types of residencies generally have lower admission standards as well (the standard being did the check clear). Now this is a generalization of course and as I said these types of AIRs can be useful and interesting. The Arte Studio Ginestrelle residency in Italy seems to fall into this category (N.B. I have not stayed there).

The Free Couch

The second broad category is what I call the free couch. These residencies don't ask for money but they don't give you any money either. Generally they offer you a free place to stay but you have to cover you own travel and daily living expenses while you are there. Some of the best residencies fall into this category. Since housing can be one of the most expensive parts of travel you shouldn't turn up your nose at these residencies. Again if you are looking to relocate or have always wanted to go somewhere in particular these types of residencies can be a real asset. They tend to have higher admission standards than the first category but easier standards than the third. The Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists in Brittany, France falls into this category.

The Full Ride

The third and final category is the holy grail: the Full Ride. These residencies, often called fellowships, actually pay you to come and make art! Some will only pay your travel and living costs, others provide a weekly or monthly stipend, which trust me is pretty amazing. These AIRs are often longer, anywhere from one month to a full year and can offer stipends of a few hundred to over a thousand dollars. Akademie Schloss Solitude in Germany falls into this category. These are the most competitive residencies out there (who doesn't want a free place to live and some cash in their pocket?). While my advice in general is to apply for anything but if you are just starting out you might want think long and hard about applying to these types of AIRs since you will be competing against very established artists.

The Reality of AIR Life

Each AIR program is different and is influenced by its organizing principals and local community. But most AIRs have multiple artists in residence at the same time. Some residencies are like college dorms, others are like upscale hotels or research institutes. An important concept to remember is that you are not at home. Things won't be as you are used to them, especially if you are in a foreign country. Keep your mind open. You are going to meet people from very different walks of life (which is the point I think). Other than the time and space to create art I think the best part of a good residency program is the opportunity to meet and be influenced by other artists.

It will take you time to adjust to your new environment. I'd say plan on about 10% of your total residency time to be devoted to getting comfortable. Often the urge is to dive right into work, especially if your residency is short. But take a few days to soak in your environment and let it influence your work.

Don't forget to roll with the punches. You are not at home. Everything is not and will not be just the way you like it. Deal with it. Don't whine. Adapt and overcome.

Engage with your fellow residents. Some people insist on locking themselves away and working on their art only to appear at mealtime. Talk with your fellow artists. Share a drink with them. Ask for their perspective on your work.

Your residency experience will depend a great deal on what you bring to it. Learn as much as you can about a residency before you apply for it. Contact former residents or the administrators if you have specific or even general questions. Most of all enjoy the experience and make some art!

International public sculpture competition for Parque de Levante in Murcia, Spain

Deadline for submissions is 12:00 p.m. , EDT, December 21, 2012

The Gabarron Foundation, together with Fundación Murcia Futuro (FMF), and K/R Architects from New York, is pleased to announce an international sculpture competition taking place in the Spanish city of Murcia on the grounds of the future Parque de Levante—the first major sculpture park to open in Spain in the twenty-first century. All international artists and designers are encouraged to participate in this unique opportunity to showcase their work. Award prizes range from 3,000 to 24,000 euros.

The 100-acre (40 hectare) Parque de Levante, designed by architects John Keenen and Terence Riley from K/R Architects, is conceived to be the largest outdoor sculpture park in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. The Park is designed to incorporate sculpture and environmental artworks of varying scales and mediums into a wholly sustainable landscape. In addition, a new museum related to art and the environment is planned for the western edge of the park, conveniently located 1 kilometer from the historic center of Murcia.

The theme of the competition will be of the artist’s own choosing, but those works that have a relationship to the Parque de Levante’s mission of “Hortus Cultura” – the artistic landscape - will be taken into special consideration by the jury.

The international jury will consist of seven or more members, chosen from the fields of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design. The five winning proposals will be produced in Murcia; all materials will be paid for and projects carried out by FMF. The sculptures will be displayed on designated sites within Parque de Levante.

Of all submitted proposals, the fifty best will be chosen as honorable mentions, in which case each artist will receive an accredited honorary certificate. Their works will be included in exhibitions in Spain and the United States and published in an exhibition catalog. They will become part of the art collection of Fundación Murcia Futuro.

The Gabarron Foundation was established in Spain in 1992, inspired by the ideals of its founder, the Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón: to educate and teach while at the same time defend, support, and disseminate Culture in its most varied forms. The Foundation’s growth over the past 20 years has been guided by its mission to “create awareness through the arts.” The Gabarron Foundation organizes and presents annual programs through its centers and museums in Spain and the United States. The Carriage House Center for the Arts is The Gabarron Foundation’s New York headquarters. Since 2001, the Carriage House has advanced as a platform for the cross-fertilization of Hispanic and Latin American cultures in the United States.

New Media Journalists Trip to India Examining Child Survival

Application deadline: December 10, 2012

In 2013 the IRP will offer three separate reporting trips of 8 to 10 days each for US and international new media journalists to report on important global health and development issues in one country.

The first of those trips will be to India on February 10-20, 2013. Future trips in 2013 will be to South Africa in July and to Brazil in November.

Priority for these trips will be given to journalists and influential media practitioners from the following countries:  United States, Brazil, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania and United Kingdom.

New media journalists include bloggers, social media editors and experts with large followings, photographers and videographers, new media commentators and contributors, and media professionals.

The trip will focus on issues of child survival in India. Among the topics we will examine are the development of vaccines, child malnutrition, tuberculosis, polio, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, access to clean water and hygiene, privatization of health care and its affect on child survival, and the impact of agricultural and rural development on child survival. The program will include meetings and site visits in Delhi and Mumbai, with a visit to a rural area.

Children of a migrant community working at a brick kiln near Bishanpur in Darbhanga district are vaccinated by a polio vaccination team.

Participants would be asked to be as active as possible in blogging or reporting in any format about the trip. We would encourage blogging during the trip, and afterwards. Multimedia content is encouraged. All candidates must fill out an application form on which they should describe the stories they would pursue during the India trip.

All of the content produced by the participants on the IRP trip to India would be posted on the IRP site and co-owned by you (or your distribution partners, depending on agreements) and the IRP. Participants would be encouraged to find other media outlets/distribution, including online publications, blogs and web sites for their work. In addition, the works produced as a result of the trip would be made available for posting on the social media channels of the IRP’s funders. The IRP new media journalists trips are supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The IRP would purchase participants’ roundtrip air tickets to India, pay for hotel costs, meals and local transportation. Participants would have to arrange their own visas to India, but the IRP will reimburse them for the visa costs. Participants who wish to stay on in India after the end of the program on February 20 would have to arrange that at their own expense.
Apply for the February trip to India by December 10, 2012.

Au - [GOLD]

Open Call - no application fee.

Deadline for submissions is Monday, 3rd December, (midnight GMT)

Gold remains an enigma within the history of art and culture, and while much has been analysed regarding its use, existence, and symbolism in art and culture, any historical discourse regarding the use of gold in art history has remained relatively stagnant in contemporary culture. Still, artists from the Byzantine period to Michelangelo and even Damien Hirst have made countless works with gold as the sole source, means, and directive of the work. Today, however, the use of gold in modern or contemporary art (while prevalent) is often used cheekily, consciously referencing the medium’s historical and overwrought allegorical signifiers, or self-awarely pointing out the kitsch connoted therein.

Beers.Lambert Contemporary is proud to announce a new open-call (completely free of any fees to the artist) in search of artwork that primarily adopts gold as its raison-d’être. The submitted work(s) can operate with this idea directly, conceptually, or in any process that informs its content or form; it may take the form of one or several pieces from an artist’s discipline; it can exist in gold or any other media, provided that the aura of gold is the artwork’s primary point of departure. Artists worldwide, at any career-stage are encouraged to submit.
