Getty Scholar grants are for established scholars, artists, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute, where they pursue their own projects free from academic obligations, make use of Getty collections, join their colleagues in a weekly meeting devoted to an annual theme, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.
3 to 9 months (September to December 2013; January to June 2014; or September 2013 to June 2014)
A stipend of up to $65,000
per year will be awarded based on length of stay, need, and salary. The
grant also includes an office at the Getty Research Institute or the
Getty Villa, research assistance, an apartment in the Getty scholar
housing complex, and airfare to and from Los Angeles.
Applications are welcome
from researchers of all nationalities who are working in the arts,
humanities, or social sciences. Results are available ca. 6 months after
the deadline.
Getty Scholar grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of:
- the overall quality of the application;
- how the proposed project bears upon the 2013-2014 annual research theme, Connecting Seas: Cultural and Artistic Exchange;
- the applicant's past achievements;
- how the project would benefit from the resources at the Getty, including its library and collections.
