- If you are a working journalist with less than 10 years of professional experience in print or online journalism, you are eligible to apply for an exciting fellowship program offered by the Phillips Foundation. Applicants propose a one-year writing project on a topic of their choosing, focusing on journalism supportive of American culture and a free society. In addition, the Foundation awards separate fellowships on the environment, on free enterprise and on law enforcement.
The Phillips Foundation offers full-time $50,000 gold fellowships and part-time $25,000 silver fellowships. The gold fellowships include a $40,000 fellowship grant and up to $10,000 to reimburse expenses. The silver fellowships comprise a $20,000 grant and up to $5,000 for expenses. The Phillips Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free enterprise system. The Foundation inaugurated its annual journalism fellowship program in 1994. A journalistic project funded under this program should be original and publishable. It will be delivered in four quarterly installments with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical publication or all together as a book. In addition to the funds set aside to reimburse the Fellow's expenses ($10,000 for a full-time fellowship and $5,000 for a part-time fellowship), the fellowship grant will be paid in four increments to correspond with completion of the quarterly writing installments. Applications for the 2013 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowships will be accepted later this year. Applications must be postmarked by February 12. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C., next spring for interviews with the judges, and the winner will be announced at an awards dinner at the National Press Club. The fellowships will commence on September 1. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. The Phillips Foundation, 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 620, Washington, DC 20001.
