‘The End is the Beginning’ - Open Call for Artists

We are now looking for artists interested in exhibiting in ‘The End is the Beginning’, a forthcoming show at Unit H Gallery, The Market Studios, Dublin.

 

 

The show will be curated by Louise Marlborough as part of the Market Studio’s Curatorial Residency Programme.

‘The End is the Beginning’ asks artists to examine a moment of personal significance from the last 12 months.  

Work will have been created in 2013 and will see artists reflect on their recent past - searching for a milestone, emotional turning point, or decisive life event - and then allowing that moment to achieve expression through the piece.

If selected, accompanying each artwork will be a written statement, giving voice to the artist’s feelings on why the event was important and how it may have shaped their view of the next 12 months. 

We welcome a diverse range of art forms - drawing, collage, sound and paintings - and encourage submissions from outside Ireland, though artists may need to cover the cost of delivering work. 

Alternatively artwork in the form of digital files for screen display, or DVD for projection may work well in terms of low cost or no cost transportation.

‘The End is the Beginning’ will take place at Unit H Gallery at the Market Studios in early December 2013.

Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (NE), call for applicants: Artist in Residence, with stipend

The Residency Program at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts was started by artists for artists and is a program that truly trusts artists and seeks to support the creative process. The Residency Program provides support in the form of time, space and monthly stipends to 36 artists per year. Three month residencies allow artists time to reflect, research and take risks. Our famously large live/work studios and installation spaces allow artists to do the work they cannot do elsewhere. Access to on-site facilities and a monthly stipend allow each artist to concentrate fully on their creative process.
The Bemis Center provides Artists-in-Residence with the gift of time, space and support:
-TIME 3 months of uninterrupted, self-directed work time.
-SPACE The Bemis Center is housed in two urban warehouses totaling 110,000 square feet in downtown Omaha, NE. Each artist is provided with a generously sized live/work studio with a private bathroom and kitchen, 24 hour access to facilities including a wood shop, approximately 9,000 square feet of installation spaces, dark room and a large sculpture fabrication facility. The 10,000 square foot Okada Sculpture Facility features 12 foot garage doors, a kiln room with a 31″W x 42″L x 27″D Bailey electric kiln, a clay mixing room, spray booth, welding facilities and 6,000 square feet of open space.

OPENPhoto II: Victories and Violations African Photo Contest

The second annual OPENPhoto competition aims to encourage analytical and critical thinking about society in Africa – and support the development of photojournalism across the continent. We are looking for strong, interpretive documentary work that has a voice.

The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) is running its second pan-African photographic competition. After the success of the inaugural competition in 2012, OPENPhoto II will focus on:

Who can Enter?

OpenPhoto II will recognise photographers based in Africa whose work highlights the struggles and successes of minority communities and individuals across the continent. You have to live more than six months of the year on the continent.

The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers, 18 years or older.

The winner and two runners-up, judged by an international jury, will be selected after the competition closes on November 30, 2013. Submissions are accepted from now until the deadline of midnight (CAT) November 30, 2013

Winners will be announced on December 16, 2013.

Image Ethics

• Only enter photographs that are un-manipulated, either in the field when shooting or in post-production.
• Besides portraits, the jury retains the right to query and possibly disqualify images where the photographer has interfered unfairly with reality.
• This is not a Photoshop competition, it is a photography competition.
• Do not alter your images in a way that enhance or change reality.  Do not remove something that bothers you (unless by cropping), and do not add or clone any objects to your image. If we suspect an image has been unfairly altered, we retain the right to ask for the original RAW file or film negative, or disqualify it. Dodging and burning is acceptable.
• Please keep to standard colour adjustment techniques, without overdoing anything. Do not submit HDR images.
• Converting digital files to black and white is accepted, but not preferred to scans from original negatives in black and white.
• Panoramas made from stitching images together are accepted, but please add in your captions or notes that they are panoramas.

Please provide the following:

1. A picture story of between 10 and 15 images, with titles and complete captions.
   • Each image should be saved as a .jpg 
   • in RGB mode, 
   • 300 dpi and 1024 pixels on the longest side.
   • Each image must be readily available in high resolution should it be selected as a winner.

   • Only images that subscribe to our stated ethics above may be entered.
2. A statement of up to 500 words about your entry.
3. Entries that are not properly submitted, may, at the discretion of the organizers, be rejected.
4. Once registered you must submit your work online. Mail-in submissions should abide by the same specifications on a disc or flash drive, compatible with Mac or PC. OSISA is not responsible for lost or damaged entries, and discs and drives will not be returned.
5. There is no time limitation during which the work must have been produced.

Applications for the 2014 Bundanon Trust UNESCO – Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme are open now. Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence Program offers an inspirational setting in rural New South Wales, Australia for the development of new work and research.

The UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme promotes the mobility of young artists in order to enrich their personal perspectives, to develop their creative project, enabling them to engage in a cultural diversity dialogue.

The Program offers residencies to young artists (between 25 and 35 years old) worldwide. UNESCO-Aschberg advocates and promotes creativity, highlights cultural exchanges and the need for artists to enrich their experience through contact with other cultures.

These residencies are catalysts for the development of artistic expression in all cultures of the world.
To be eligible to apply for the bursary you must be:

• An individual Visual Artist
• Between the ages of 25-35 years old
• From any country except Australia
• Available to take up  the residency 2014 and stay for a period of 4 weeks between 1 October – 30 November 2014.

OPEN CALL: The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University

OPEN CALL: The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University is now accepting applications for the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program for the 2014-2015 academic year. The program provides one-year fellowships for projects in a variety of disciplines in an open intellectual atmosphere.

Stipends are funded up to $70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2014 through May 31, 2015.

Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal and are expected to reside in the Boston area.

Gallery Route One (CA), Call for for San Francisco Bay Area Applicants: Fellowship for Young Artists (Ages 21 – 35)

Gallery Route One (GRO) invites artists ages 21 to 31 to apply for an 18-month fellowship. Open to artists living in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, working in all fine art media; no crafts.
This is an opportunity to become involved in the life of a working gallery and to exhibit new work in two solo exhibitions and one or more group exhibitions at Gallery Route One in Point Reyes Station, Marin County, California.
The artist will have a solo exhibition in the small Annex Gallery within the first nine months of receiving the fellowship, and a solo exhibition in the large Center Gallery at the end of the eighteen-month Fellowship period. During the Fellowship period Fellows will be offered space in artist member group shows, GRO’s annual Box Show, the small works gallery, and any external exhibitions offered to gallery artists. Fellows will also be represented on our website. There is no fee for the Fellowship or Fellows’ exhibitions, but Fellows are required to serve as gallery attendants, once per month or less, and must cover their portion of the costs for printing and mailing the gallery announcement for their solo exhibition in the Center Gallery. Fellows are expected to host the reception for their solo exhibition. Fellows will receive a $500 stipend to defray Fellowship-related expenses.

Call for Work From Berlin Based Musicians

As part of Berlin Current, two artistic commissions will be awarded to young Berlin-based musicians. With this call, Berlin Current encourages new ideas and productions that contribute to the exchange of knowledge within the Berlin music community. Selected projects will have a budget of 2500 EUR and will be presented at CTM.14 Festival (January 24 – February 2, 2014). Artists will be mentored during the production phase by Berlin musician and producer, Stefan Betke (Pole).

 
In name, Berlin Current ("Current" = currently; contemporarily; a continuous flow; trend) emphasizes the continuous renewal of Berlin music culture. Radical new music futures are not just "new", but evolve through critical engagement with the past and what already exists. Awareness for this precedent for innovation counteracts the negative horizon of a hasty and short-lived success. Berlin Current’s call for works is therefore closely aligned with the CTM Festival 2014 theme.
The 15th edition of CTM Festival is dedicated to idiosyncratic musical pioneers and the influence of their ideas in contemporary pop and experimental music. The theme Dis  Continuity reflects the productive tensions between disruption and continuity, which fuel the dynamism of musical evolution. By encouraging dialogue between pioneers and emerging artists, CTM.14 illuminates the often-unacknowledged connections between past experiments and contemporary music practice. The last century of musical history thereby reveals itself as the articulation of increasingly open conceptions of music that bring previously discrete schools, methods, techniques, and technologies into conversation.
Submissions to the open call may, for example, engage with major personal influences in artists’ own work, or with key figures in Berlin (pop) music history. Since many of the current protagonists of Berlin music culture have only recently come to Berlin, it is also possible to deal with important developments in pop music originating outside the city. The call encourages artists to reflect on their own musical practice while simultaneously breaking new creative ground.

Conditions

The open call is directed toward aspiring young music creators in Berlin. Applicants should ideally have begun pursuing a professional practice (i.e. have already released music and perform regularly), but still be in the early stages of their career. Submissions may take, but are not limited to, the form of a concert, audiovisual performance, or installation, but must be new projects or projects in development that have not yet been realized. A thorough project description enables the careful consideration of the jury. Submissions must be written in English (or alternatively in German if an English summary is contained) and contain the following materials:

• A project description and explanation with reference to the subject of the call (PDF)
• If possible, sketches, images, audio material (please provide online)
• A brief outline of the technical requirements essential to the realization of the project

Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellowship

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) is one of Chicago’s major museum institutions and one of the nation’s largest facilities devoted to the art of our time, offering exhibitions, performances, and programs of the most thought-provoking art created since 1945.

Considered one of the premiere curatorial training opportunities in the nation, the MCA’s Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellowship is intended to offer an exceptional graduate-level candidate the opportunity to gain professional curatorial experience in a major museum setting. The Fellow is primarily responsible for exhibition- and/or collection-related research, with additional duties as appropriate to specific projects. As a 12-month commitment, the Fellow is exposed to all aspects of curatorial operations and participates in internal and external communications on a daily basis. With a start date of July 1, 2014, the full-time fellowship carries a stipend of $25,000 plus selected benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the cover letter differ from the essay of intent?
A: The essay should elaborate on your interest in the program, reasons for applying, qualifications, and professional and scholarly experiences related to the Fellowship. The cover letter is intended to be introductory. It is similar to a cover letter submitted with a job application.
Q: How long should the writing sample be?
A: The writing sample should be no more than 2000 words (roughly 5 pages). It can be an excerpt of a longer work. Both academic and professional papers are accepted.
Q: Does the MCA sponsor visas?
A: The MCA encourages international applications, however the MCA does not sponsor visas. We expect applicants to procure their visas independently. Applicants can contact their embassy to learn about what type of visa is needed and how long it would take to secure one. International candidates must be in possession of a valid U.S. work visa for the entire fellowship period.
Q: How strict is the start date?
A: Applicants must possess an M.A. degree by the start date of July 1. International applicants should also be in possession of a visa by the start date.
Q: I earned my M.A. several years ago. Can I still apply?
A: Qualified applicants must possess an M.A. degree. There is no specified time frame required to have received your degree, however, qualified candidates must have relevant professional or academic experience since obtaining their M.A.

The Visual Arts Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites artists and designers focused on Print Media, to apply for a tenure-track faculty position recruited at the level of assistant professor. Applicants should be able to contribute to the advancement of experimental forms of Print Media Arts and Design. We have a strong interest in candidates with expertise in traditional and extended print practices. We have a preference for candidates with multidisciplinary orientation bridging areas of animation, design, photography and gaming. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a broad understanding of the scholarly fields of print media studies, critical histories of print media, and print media theory and visual art practices. Possible related areas of research and teaching might include painting, media arts, immersive environments and convergences of design, art, science and technology. As always, the department seeks to add to its current strength in the creation of socially and environmentally engaged work.

NYFA Emergency Relief Fund -- Deadline 9/15

Multimedia course available [MENA]

Professional visual journalists from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia can participate in this course and receive a EUR2,000 grant to produce a high-quality multimedia story.

World Press Photo invites professional visual journalists to apply for the “Reporting Change Multimedia Course.” Ten selected participants will receive guidance from professional trainers and a grant to produce a high-quality multimedia story from the region.
Applicants must have one year of experience working as a freelancer or on staff, be nationals or permanent residents working in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco or Tunisia, have access to high definition multimedia equipment, and must have a basic understanding of English and/ or French.

The multimedia storytelling course consists of three phases that will take place between January 2014 and April 2014: five days of face to face introduction including planning and producing a story followed by an online coaching, and will end with a face to face workshop for finalizing the stories.

Each of the participants will receive a EUR2,000 (US$2,675) grant to produce a high-quality multimedia story from the region. Travel and lodging expenses are covered.

Film festival seeks story ideas [Latin America, Spain, US]

Any professional or amateur writer from Latin America, Spain or the US Hispanic community can participate.
The Bengala/UANL Award invites writers to submit their stories to be filmed. Ten finalists will receive an invitation to the Baja International Film Festival in Los Cabos to be held Nov. 13 to 16.
Out of the 10 finalists, five texts will be published in a commemorative book by the University of Nuevo Leon. The first place winner will receive MEX50,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the festival in Los Cabos (flight, accommodation and accreditation included).

Fellowships for photography on global health open

Photographers around the world can compete for a US$4,000 fellowship.

SocialDocumentary.net (CDN) and Management Sciences for Health (MSH) are seeking submissions founded in using photography to increase the understanding of complex global issues.
Specific topics may include, but are not limited to, problems of and solutions to global health, conflict, security, the environment, human trafficking, loss of traditional cultures, domestic violence, energy, incarceration, climate change and the Arab Awakening.
Two grand prize winners will be each awarded a US$4,000 fellowship to spend up to two weeks documenting the global health projects and up to two weeks of expense-paid travel in one to two of the countries in which MSH works. The SDN documentary winner will receive US$1,000 cash award.
All winning entries will participate in an exhibition at powerHouse Arena, Brooklyn, NY, February 27 through March 23, 2014. SDN and MSH will pay all printing and preparation costs for the exhibition.
Photographers selected for the MSH Photography Fellowship must: provide all his/her own photography equipment and have valid passport (MSH will arrange for any appropriate visas), have strong spoken English language skills, be available for up to two weeks of travel to between January and June, 2014.
In addition to the photography part of the project, photographers must prepare and execute a one-day training program for MSH local staff.
The application fee of US$35 allows for submitting 6–24 images.

Investigative journalism grants offered for unemployed reporters in the US

Experienced US investigative reporters who are currently unemployed can apply for a grant of up to US$10,000.

The George Polk Grants for Investigative Reporting offer financial support to experienced reporters to pursue projects related to social justice. The intent is to promote public awareness of social problems in immigration, housing, welfare, health and employment.
Special consideration is given to unemployed journalists, but this is not a requirement.
Applicants should have a proven record as an investigative reporter and propose a topic with which he or she is familiar. Grants range from US$2,500 to US$10,000 depending on the complexity of the project.
Grantees receive editorial supervision and help with publication.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
