Outcome:

The first presentation offers a possibility to present a rough work-out of the artistic concept in a studio, with the integration of the audience as an active part of the performance.
The second step is a work-in-progress show in a (theatre) studio with minimal lights and technical help, with audience feedback-round at the end.
The closing evening of the residency program at the end of the third step is a theatre performance where participating pairs present the results of their research work.

Duration: 14th October to 18th December, 2013

Application Guidelines and Criteria:

For artist/creative who:

• are experienced and curious to research into the subject of improvisation in dance
• wish to collaborate with Hungarian colleagues from a different art field
• have participated or currently are participating in any DÉPARTS program or were/are students of P.A.R.T.S. -  this can be an advantage, but not necessary!

The residency takes place within the frame of "Research into the Unknown", a program that aims at encouraging artists to research on improvisation as an artistic tool, as a means of creation in contemporary dance. The program offers an intensive researching opportunity for artists/creators and focusing on the creative process, on the research itself rather then creating a performance. The program is made up of three consecutive steps, in each step the research period is followed by a presentation where  audience plays an important role by giving feedback and dialogue with the artists / creators.

What is the aim of the program?
The aim of the program is to encourage artists/creators who are researching improvisation as an artistic tool in the field of contemporary dance and other art forms. Each semester one Hungarian and one foreign artist/creator participate in the residency program. They choose a partner / artist from another art-form, with whom they venture into the Unknown with the tool of improvisation.

PHYNANCE RESIDENCY OPEN CALL

Deadline 8th September '13

In partnership with the Barry Flanagan Foundation, Flat Time House is accepting applications for an artist's residency to begin in November 2013.

FTHo, the former home and studio of artist John Latham, which he designated a 'living sculpture', will operate as a base for interrogating sculpture as a subject of research, rather than a static artform or medium. The residency will involve time spent in the John Latham and Barry Flanagan Archives.

The play of shifting dimensions and the play of paradox inherent in the work of Barry Flanagan was reflected in his interest in 'pataphysics, a science that rests 'on the truth of contradictions and exceptions', a systematic approach to undermining all systems that is also reflected in the work of his former teacher John Latham. PHYNANCE, named from a pataphysical reference in a drawing by Flanagan aims to continue and facilitate such approaches to sculptural production.

The selected artist will be provided with accommodation, studio, stipend and a production budget towards new work. The artist will be selected from an open call, with the 4 month residency resulting in a public exhibition and publication in 2014. We are seeking applications from artists who have been working professionally for 5 years. We welcome international applications.

The residency selection panel consists of Mike Nelson (Artist) Jo Melvin (Barry Flanagan Foundation), Claire Louise Staunton (Curator, FTHo) and Jon Wood (Research Curator, Henry Moore Institute).

The residency includes a 2000 pound budget towards the production of new work, a 2000 pound stipend and up to 350 pounds towards travel expenses. Flat Time House will offer a self contained artist's residence with en-suite bathroom. Adjoining kitchen facilities are shared with FTHo's staff.

The deadline for applications is September 8 2013. The residency is to begin late November 2013 and run until late March 2014.

Artists will be judged primarily on the quality of their work, but also on the potential of their practice to translate into a new body of work that re-examines the role of sculpture.

Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco

The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco is a unique art and education program that provides Bay Area artists with access to discarded materials, a stipend, and a large studio space at the Recology Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center.

Since 1990, over 100 professional artists and twenty student artists have completed residencies at this one-of-a-kind program and have made art from discarded materials. The studio is located at the San Francisco Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center (Recology San Francisco), a 47-acre facility that includes the trash transfer station (where trash goes before being sent to landfill), the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Organics Annex, the Public Disposal and Recycling Area ("The Dump"), and other recycling areas. The facility, which is located west of Highway 101 near Candlestick Park, also is home to a three-acre sculpture garden containing work by former artists-in-residence.

During their residencies, artists have scavenging privileges and 24-hour access to the company's well-equipped art studio. Artists speak to elementary school classes and adult tour groups about the experience of working with recycled materials. At the conclusion of their residency, Recology hosts a two-day public exhibition and reception for the artists featuring the artwork made during their residency. When the residency ends, artists contribute artwork to the program's permanent collection and these pieces continue to be shown in off-site exhibitions that promote recycling and reuse.

Artists must first attend a tour of our facility, then complete and submit an application by the listed deadline in order to be eligible for a residency. Public tours, which include visits to the recycling facilities, art studio, and sculpture garden, take place on the third Saturday of each month. To reserve a spot on a tour, call (415) 330-1414. Please do not show up without a reservation! We need to give you directions and other important information, including proper attire for the tour. The tour will be cancelled if it is raining. Children under nine years old are prohibited from attending tours as a safety precaution.

2014 Artist in Residence Application
The application deadline for residencies that start in 2014 is August 30, 2013. Applications are accepted June 1 - August 30.

Our advisory board, which is composed of former artists-in-residence, arts professionals, environmentalists, and educators, reviews applications in October and selects eight to ten candidates to interview in November. Interviews are scheduled between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. At that time, finalists must make a short presentation about their work. The board awards between four and eight residencies per year, depending on the number of part-time and full-time residencies allotted.

The board evaluates applications based on the artist's demonstrated commitment to resource conservation and recycling through art, their experience in art education and/or environmental education, how the residency can provide the artist with professional growth, the quality of previous work, and the artist's reputation and references. The board also considers the artist's use of materials and the types of tools available in the studio.

At this time, we only accept applications from local, career-level, professional artists. Students currently enrolled at any university, college, or other educational institution will not be considered. We do not accept applications from artists who reside a driving distance of more than one hour from San Francisco.

Akbank Sanat International Curator Competition 2013

The second edition of the Akbank Sanat International Curator Competition

Akbank Sanat is pleased to announce the second edition of the International Curator Competition. Curators are invited to submit proposals by September 10, 2013.

Started in 2012, Akbank Sanat International Curator Competition has the goal to provide support for emerging curators, reinforce interest in curatorial practices, and encourage new projects in the field of contemporary art.

In its first year, The Akbank Sanat International Curator Competition received a large number of applications from over 100 curators of various nationalities. Alejandra Labastida's application was selected by the jury, consisting of Jack Persekian (Director and Head Curator of the Palestinian Museum), Francis McKee (Director of CCA, Glasgow; tutor and research fellow at Glasgow School of Art), and Basak Senova (independent curator). Accordingly, Labastida’s proposal realized as an exhibition, ran from February 19 to April 27, 2013 at Akbank Art Centre, Istanbul, accompanied with program of activities (performances, talks, and screenings) and an exhibition catalogue.

Developed and coordinated by Basak Senova, the competition has an application-based process. The content and the quality of the proposals will be evaluated by an international jury consisting of three curators. This year’s jury includes Anne Barlow (Director of Art in General, New York, and Co-Curator of the Latvian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale), Christine Tohme (Director of Ashkal Alwan, Beirut), and Branko Franceschi (curator of the Croatian Pavilion, 55th Venice Biennale; co-curator of the Project Biennial D-0 ARK Underground in Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Director of the Virtual Museum of the Contemporary Art).

The winning curator is given opportunities to realize the proposal as an exhibition that will take place in the first half of 2014 at Akbank Art Centre, Istanbul, accompanied by an exhibition catalogue and additional activities. The curatorial fee, the exhibition production, travel expenses of the curator/s and artists, the production of the catalogue and the additional activities will be covered by Akbank Sanat.

Eligibility
Curators under the age of 40 are eligible to apply for the competition. There is no condition of residency or citizenship. Curators may apply for the competition as individuals as well as in groups (or as curatorial collectives). Curators will not be allowed to participate as artists in the projects.

Guidelines
By filling the application form (to be downloaded from www.akbanksanat.com/icc) the curators will explain the conceptual framework of the exhibition proposal as well as the artists and their works in detail. There could be additional activities (for instance: talks or video screenings) that could be incorporated into the exhibition proposal. Application forms must be written in English. Applicants are expected to submit(only electronic copies) the completed application form, CV (max. 2 pages) and accompanying visual material for their proposals (max. 4MB in total) by sending emails to icc@akbank.com. Closing date for applications are September 10, 2013, 17h GMT +2. Late applications shall not be considered for evaluation. Entries must be previously unpublished, and the proposal must not have been realised or exhibited before.

Document format
 Text documents must be in only in RTF or PDF files (CV, biography, press articles, letters, technical file).
 Photo documents (picture of artworks, portrait of the artist) must be in JPEG, TIFF or PNG files obligatory in high resolution 300 dots/inch, over 2MO per photo (necessary for quality printing).
 Each photo file of work must be named so : name-of-artist_given-name_title-of-work_year .
 Videos must not be compressed and have to be sent or by large file transfer, else on dvd sent by post (the jury shall not consider links on Utube, Myspace etc).
 Send also 3 photo captions for each video, in JPEG, TIFF ou PNG files obligatory in high resolution 300 dots/inch. Precise the length of video (minutes, secondes). Indicate type and size of screening.
 A technical file must match each photo of work and indicate name of the file, name of the artist, title of work, used technique, year, dimensions, name of photographer of work, material needed for installation, if necessary sketches and plan, and also in 4 lines an explanatory description of each art work.
 You can also provide a portfolio in pdf showcasing your previous work (optional).

LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE puts forward a production residency in Net art/ Web art. This residency is open to artists in Visual Arts and new media already working with new technologies or wishing to explore new medias. LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE is interested in projects that aim at the exploration of the various possibilities of the medium, such as interactivity, participative art, hypertext, sound exploration, fixed or moving image treatement, etc.
The residency stretches over four months between then beginning of April and the end of July 2014. The program is intended exclusively for artists between 25 year and 35 years of age from French Africa who already have two years of professional practice and whose origin is from one of the countries members or observers of the International Organisation of la Francophonie. KRAN FILM RESIDENT In October and November 2013, KRAN Film is organising in Brussels two residencies for cultural operators, with a particular interest in independent, non-commercial video art and art films. During the period of 10 days, each resident will have the opportunity to visit Flemish film and video archives (Argos, VAF, Cinematek, Plus-tot te laat, Cinema Nova, Auguste Orts, 68septante, Kran Film); meet Flemish film makers and film professionals; deliver a lecture, debate or presentation at the RITS School of Arts; and present a screening programme at Beursschouwburg. In total, two residents will be selected - one for the October and another for the November residency. The residency offers travel costs to Brussels (return ticket - limited amount), accommodation, per diems, fee and a small budget for screening rights costs. eligibility This call is addressed to international programmers, programme managers, curators and film experts with an interest in independent film and video art, who are working worldwide in the institutional or non-governmental sector, including PhD researchers. The call excludes the commercial film sector. Residents who do not live and work in Belgium may apply to the call. The applicant should send a CV and a short motivation letter. The motivation letter should clearly state how the resident will benefit from the residency programme and his/her vision of the implementation of gained experiences in the resident's future career. focus The residency is organised around different themes that Kran Film, together with its partners and residents, would like to examine in 2013 and 2014. The November residency will be held from 13th and 22nd November 2013. residency structure The resident will be visiting Flemish film and video archives that will preselect films for the resident's visit in accordance to the residency theme. Meetings with filmmakers and other film professionals may also be organized on the resident's request. The resident will deliver a lecture or a debate or a presentation at the RITS School of Arts in Brussels. The lecture/debate/presentation is to be developed around the chosen theme (labour / gender) and will take film as an analytical device. This event will be organised for the students, film professionals and film fondlers at the RITS School of Arts. The resident will prepare a screening programme to be developed around the chosen theme (already presented with the motivation letter). It is highly recommended that the resident includes at least one film from the Flemish film or video archives he or she will visit during the residency period. This event will take place in Beursschouwburg, Brussels, at the end of the residency period. Screening programmes will take place on 26th October for the first residency (labour) and 21st November for the second (gender). Language English is the official language of the residency. If the language of the films on the screening programme is not English, the film should have English or Dutch subtitles. Context In 2013 and 2014 KRAN Film residency programme aims to explore the notion of a relational citizenship. The programme is concerned with stereotypes about identities that persist in Europe despite the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and increased migrations. Instead of uniting in its diversity, Europe is dividing along ethnic, religious or gender borders. It is in this regard that the forms of living together in migrating Europe have to be challenged. Examining these circumstances, the residency wishes to raise questions of citizenship in a multinational and multiethnic society, about neo-liberalism, migrations, populism, de-colonialism, gender, ethics and the like. Eurocentric and multipolar order, as well as contingent and precarious identities are to be examined. In 2013 we will be discussing two themes: labour in October and gender in November. Deadline extended: Journalists can enter a US$10,000 story contest for best coverage of infectious diseases

Journalists from the United States, Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa can win international reporting trips worth up to $10,000 for submitting the best stories on infectious diseases.

Stories can address diseases including AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. These three diseases alone are the leading causes of death in low- and middle-income countries. They claim nearly 4 million lives every year and cost billions of dollars in lost productivity. The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is launching the story contest to spur discussion about how the global community deals with these critical health issues.

Reports published or broadcast between May 20 and Sept. 1, 2013, will qualify. The deadline for submission is Sept. 1, 2013. Along with the story submission, participants must include a 300-word proposal for an international reporting trip to expand their coverage of infectious diseases.

The International Center for Journalists will select three winners, one from each region. An editor or manager at each of the selected news organizations will also earn a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend ICFJ’s 2013 Awards Dinner on Nov. 7, 2013. The Africa contest is administered in partnership with the African Health Journalists Association.
Winners will be notified on Oct. 1, 2013.
Stories must be in English or French and cover diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Possible topics include:

• Government policies and programs that address infectious diseases
• Effectiveness of donor-funded infectious-diseases programs
• The state of funding for the delivery, treatment and research of infectious diseases

Stories must be well-researched and well-written or presented. We will give special preference to the following:

• Multimedia feature articles or documentaries
• Investigative reports or explanatory stories
• Reports that use data, mapping and other digital tools to engage audiences. Examples: Facebook chats, Twitter feeds, or text messaging that solicits citizen reports on outbreaks and treatment of infectious disease

Journalists working in each region for print, broadcast or online media qualify. The contest also is open to freelance journalists, whose stories are published or broadcast by Sept. 1, 2013.

Thomson Foundation hosts journalism competition

Journalists under the age of 30 working in developing countries can compete for this award.

The Thomson Foundation is launching a new category - “young journalist from the developing world” - as part of the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) Awards.

Three finalists will be flown to London for the gala award night in November along with a host of other potential award winners and leading figures from the world of journalism.

Journalists working in countries with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of less than US$20,000 are eligible.
Entrants should submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work (print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four) produced in the 12 months preceding Sept. 18, 2013. Entries can be in any language but should be accompanied by a verbatim English-language translation.

Environmental film festival seeks entries

Filmmakers, producers, TV journalists, authors and editors can submit their work.

Ökofilmtour, a festival celebrating nature and environmental films, will take place January to April 2014 in Brandenburg, Germany.
Film topics should be thoroughly researched, highlight problems and approach solutions in original, open-minded ways that take into account issues of life and survival.

Films of all genres will be considered, but dubbed into German language or with German subtitles. Submitted DVD copies (Blue Ray, HD) of films should be produced no earlier than January 2012.

The Ökofilmtour intends to acknowledge each winning film with a EUR€5,000 (US$6,625) award.
The submission deadline is Sept. 30.

Arab Camera Festival seeks entries

Filmmakers and documentary makers with an Arab background can participate in this festival.

The Arab Camera Festival Rotterdam is now accepting entries for its second year. Arab Camera creates space for open dialogue about art, human rights, emancipation and political freedom in Arab countries and Europe, specifically in the Netherlands.

Feature films, short films as well as documentaries are part of the festival program.

The competitive categories are: between nostalgia and future; 10 years Iraq; and new Arab generation filmmakers (up to the age of 30). The Arab Film Festival also encourages directors to submit work that fits into none of the competitive categories.

Applicants are eligible if the director of the film is of Arab origin, the film is shot in an Arab country or the main language of the film is Arabic.

AIR―ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ― a multi-disciplinary program for architects, visual artists, musicians and writers

Now, in the age of globalization and in the face of today’s fast-past-paced cultural knowledge transfer, it is more important than ever to strive for a cross-cultural dialogue based on tolerance and mutual respect. In order to promote international exchange, the federal state of Lower Austria has initiated an artist-in-residence program, for which it has set up five studio apartments and a large common room on the top floor of the former carpet factory within the Art Mile in Krems (Kunstmeile Krems).
In order to ensure diversity and a vibrant atmosphere among the studios, the program will award its scholarships to artists from the fields of visual arts, literature, architecture and music.
These studio apartments, which have housed artists from many different countries since 2000, serve as temporary living and working spaces and provide the opportunity for both international and interdisciplinary exchange.
The aim is to establish partnerships with international institutions that award artist scholarships and provide studios to visiting artists, in order to give artists from Lower Austria opportunities for living and working abroad.

Intel Fellowship @ CIID

MISSION

Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) announces – in collaboration with Intel Corporation – a programme that awards and fosters excellence and widespread influence in Art, Design and Technology.
The Intel Fellowship @ CIID recognises and resources outstanding initiatives that extend the impact of research and researchers in interaction design, artistic practice in technology and creative inquiry in communications and media.
The programme involves practice-based researchers in art and design with the ongoing research at CIID. It also provides artists/designers/researchers with opportunities to develop self-led projects that push boundaries in practice and research in pursuits that integrate art, design and technology practice and theory.
The emphasis of projects and programmes developed through this corporate/research partnership will be on evolving the perspectives, tools and shared knowledge of art and design communities in response to a rapidly changing and increasingly technological world.
The Fellowship will be awarded annually to an individual or group of practitioners/researchers with demonstrated potential to further disseminate and extend the influence of outstanding research and projects, perspectives, methods, and tools that contribute to a shared knowledge base and to the development of curricula in interaction design and related fields.
Fellows will have the chance to work in close collaboration with the CIID Research team throughout the residence at the CIID studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. Fellows will engage with technologists and researchers at Intel, and will have the possibility to further project and development resources through the pioneering computational technologies company.
The Intel Fellowship @ CIID is part of a network of similar programmes at other institutions internationally, all devoted to investigations in art, design and technology – fostering cross-institutional communication and influence in related disciplines. The activities of the Fellow will be enriched and supported by this global network of researchers and the Fellow will be expected to develop programmes of influence in collaboration with these other institutions and individuals.

FELLOWSHIP DETAILS

CIID will award one fellowship consisting of:
- Up to 30,000 USD project budget (This maximum should include subsistence estimates for the duration of the residency and can be used in part to allocate living expenses for the applicant.)
- A 12-month programme cycle, starting from October 7, 2013 (It is not a requirement that the selected Fellow spend the full twelve months of the Fellowship period in Copenhagen. The Fellow is expected to reside in the Copenhagen region for at least 50% of this period.)
- Space and facilities for research and practice, including digital fabrication and workshop facilities
- Access to a global network of expertise through world-class research-practitioners in art, design and technology
- Involvement in CIID/Intel’s ongoing thinking and projects
- Project development and conceptual direction support
- Potential additional funding for project specific activities

COMMITMENTS & ACTIVITIES

The Fellow is expected to be in residence in CIID for at least 6 months of the fellowship tenure. Besides developing the proposed project, the Fellow is asked to:
- Prepare 2 published outputs (possibly in collaboration with CIID)
- Give 2 presentations in an international form or repute (paper, publication, workshop)
- Give 2 presentations at CIID
- Be present at an Intel meeting in London in October 2013
- Write a weekly blog post about the work progress or relevant activities
- Be responsible for communications to Intel (coordination of a speaker series, hosting a workshop with Intel representatives)

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA

The applications will be reviewed by a committee of experts. Interviews will be requested as needed. Selected candidates will be contacted for further discussion about their work and project proposal, and the Intel Fellow @ CIID will be announced by September 15th, 2013 for start in October 2013.
The criteria for assessment of applications include:

- Potential impact of the research
- Proven ability to plan, manage and accomplish the project
- Qualities of the applicant as an independent researcher

Call for Applicants: Animation Artist in Residence Tokyo 2014

Deadline: September 9th, 2013

This project, organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunka-cho / Government of Japan), is an artist in residence program which aims to provide three outstanding young animation artists from around the world with an opportunity to come to Tokyo and create new works while directly interacting with Japanese animation culture. In doing so, we aim to promote both the creation of excellent works of animation and a better understanding of Japanese culture.
Applicants must reside outside of Japan and be a citizen of a country other than Japan. Be between the ages of 20 and 35 on September 9th 2013. Be able to speak either English or Japanese at least well enough to communicate in everyday situations. Have access to the equipment necessary to participate in a remote interview (i.e. a computer capable of connecting to the internet and using Skype).
Target field: Animation production
Number of applicants accepted: 3
Duration of the program: 70 days between January 7th and March 17th, 2014

Program summary:  Education/training: participants will give reports on the progress of their work being created as part of the program and will receive guidance from accomplished Japanese animators/experts on a regular basis.
Visits/exchange events: participants will visit animation studios and participate in exchange events with artists and students enrolled in art programs at educational institutions.
Creation of a new work: participants will begin a new work while in Japan and present the finished work or one part of a work in progress at the end of their stay.
