Brief For Applicants

This residency is a collaborative project between the Arts Council of Wales, Partneriaeth Corwen Partnership, Denbighshire County Council (DCC), Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) and Addo.
Bursary: £8,000 for 4 months starting 15 July 2013
We are inviting applications from artists with a collaborative/participative approach to undertake a residency in Corwen that will draw out and address issues of physical and environmental connectivity across the town, highlighted by the proposal to extend the heritage Llangollen Railway from Carrog. The proposed new railway platform lies to the east of the town, some distance from the town centre across a series of fields. There is potential to bring these under-utilized green spaces, which currently act as a barrier, to the fore via an artist in residency, which would consider the links between local residents and users, the natural environment and the proposed influx of tourists that the railway development is intended to generate.
The residency aims to mark this field area as a creative space, bringing it into use and linking the platform and the town.

Background

An artist’s residency undertaken in 2011 explored potential sites within the townscape and identified a series of possible sites for further work. These included creating links between the platform and the town via route-marking using poetry; manifestations to the exterior of buildings facing the platform; the creation of a wet meadow and a town trail. The subsequent Corwen Art Action Plan and a further seminar identified the field area as the priority for any further work. It is this site which would have the greatest impact and has the most potential to link the new platform and the town.

The Site

The proposed site (field area) is under ownership of the local authority and has formerly been used for grazing and is currently naturally planted. It is adjacent to the former railway embankment by the side of the river and is therefore liable to flooding but can also sometimes be very dry.
In order to progress with this site the space must be investigated in terms of planting and topography and in relation to its connection with the town physically and in relation to its current and potential future use.

The Project

The proposal is therefore to engage an artist for a four-month period to work with local residents and community groups in order to develop possible visual solutions to some of the constraints within the site, namely that it acts as a barrier to access to and from the platform; it is underused and visually uniteresting; it may be difficult to site certain objects or planting there due to potential flooding. However, it has great potential environmentally as a possible outdoor classroom; local gardeners have established a community garden and an orchard; dog-walkers are keen for paths and access and residents would like youth engagement.
In the longer term we hope that by working with the artist a viable local group will form that would be interested in working to maintain the site and ensure its sustainability as a resource for local residents and as an attractive feature for the town. Currently there are active members of gardening clubs and the Countryside Department within the local authority are busy in the area. The steering group and Addo will introduce the artist to these groups. In the longer term this local group may take on the site, possibly through Asset Transfer. This group may include:

• individuals/groups interested in the environment and gardening
• arts groups & local artists
• cross generational groups, including local schools
• dog walkers
• any other groups/individuals identified as key stakeholders during the residency

The residency will act as a pilot project for the Arts Council of Wales’ new ‘Idea’ strand of residencies, which will:

• focus mainly on the development of artists’ practice and the experimental exploration outside of the gallery context, partly through artist led initiatives
• acknowledge an area of work that moves away from the traditional residency concept to favour artistic research and development, critical debate/writing and curatorial initiatives
• encourage cross fertilisation between the areas of visual art, applied art, architecture and design (ACW, 2010, p.4).

Taking place between July – October 2013, the broader aims of the project are to raise the aspirations of the town and develop relationships between existing groups and project partners, exploring and developing ways in which artists may contribute to the development and life of the town.

Partners

Representatives from Partneriaeth Corwen Partnership, DCC Departments (including countryside, planning and economic development), Arts Council of Wales (ACW) and Addo will form the Steering Group for the project. Addo will act as the main point of contact between the group and the artist. Local groups and associations will work with the steering group and the artist to identify local participants in the initial stages of the project. The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) will act as consultant advisors regarding the viability of any scheme put forward in terms of water and planting.

Outcomes

The material outcomes of the residency are open but may take the form of temporary artworks at the site with local groups and residents. There is also potential to explore and develop proposals for environment, landscaping and use of the site as a thoroughfare between the town and the railway platform and as a community space with a focus on a sustainable environmental project. This may involve temporary structures such as shelters or outdoor classrooms/performance spaces, paths and routes, landscaping, earthworks, etc but would need to be negotiated with the artist following consultation with project partners and would be the basis of further funding applications.

The Artist

The artist will be someone interested in the environment, architecture or design with previous experience of working with others to develop ideas. An ethos of collaborative practice and engagement is uppermost.
This opportunity is open to UK and International Artists.
Applicants must demonstrate:

• Creative originality and professionalism in their work
• The ability and desire to work collaboratively with the public and other partners as part of their creative practice
• A willingness to immerse themselves in the life and culture of the area
• An understanding of the issues of connectivity (and the paradoxical tensions) inherent within regeneration schemes and partnership working and the concerns and opportunities presented by rural tourism.
• The artist must be aware of and abide by the laws for working with children and vulnerable adults, should they undertake such work as part of the residency.
• In the event of manufacture/installation of artworks by the artist, the artist must demonstrate current and appropriate indemnity insurance relevant to the artist in person and to any object/s to be manufactured.

Studio

The artist will be provided with a flexible space in Corwen, which could be used as a studio/workspace/meeting space/gallery.

Payment

The selected artist will be paid in installments to be agreed on appointment. This fee is inclusive of all travel costs, living expenses, and studio equipment. In addition a small materials budget of £2,000 is also available.

Interviews will take place in Corwen on 10th July 2013. Candidates must be available for interview on this date. Invitations to interview will be sent out by 1st July 2013. Up to £100 per artist will be available to cover travel and subsistence expenses incurred by attending an interview. Interviews via Skype may be arranged. At interview, interviewees will be expected to speak in more detail about their work and working processes and the approach that they envisage taking towards the residency.

Akiyoshidai International Art Village Residence Support Program: trans_2013-2014

The prefix ‘trans’ means to go beyond, get across, cross, exchange, change and convert.
The Residence Support Program provides a time and place for artists to experience new encounters and carry out experiments to guide their future projects. Participating artists are expected to bring new ideas to the local culture and people while they, in turn, will hopefully acquire new perspectives through these fresh encounters. As a result of the residence program, the artists will convey their new experiences, gathered from the local lifestyle and our particular  geographic situation, to their next destination. We hope that the residence program at Akiyoshidai International Art Village becomes a space for artists to go beyond cultural borders and expand their outlooks, exchange their unique understandings and establish relationships with fellow artists.

Copyright and Publicity

(4) Artists may be asked to loan or donate their pieces of work but they have the rights to refuse such requests.

* Artists have to install and deinstall their work by themselves.
* Artists also have to pack their work and pay shipping costs if necessary.
* Artists are not allowed to be accompanied by anyone for the program.  When artists’ family or friends visit AIAV, they can stay
  with charge of accommodation fee for approximately 3,000 yen per night (prices differ according to room types).

Fieldwork: Marfa is the joint project of two leading European art academies: Les Beaux-Arts Nantes and HEAD – Genève (Geneva University of Art and Design). This inter­national researcher-in-residence program is dedicated to the practice of art in public space, critical approaches to landscape and artistic projects based on field investigation methodologies.
Located in Marfa, Texas, USA, this unique platform is intended for emerging artists and researchers whose projects require immersion into the specific environment of Marfa and Texas territory, necessitating movement through geography as well as time and space for the purposes of specific research work.
The residency time period is two months and comes with a research grant of 2000 USD, enabling the applicants to produce theoretical and/or practical work using their own methodologies, with support from a number of pro­fess­ional partners, specialized stakeholders and educational institutions. Fieldwork: Marfa research program is based on the idea that the residents develop their own research related to academic programs and curriculum of the two academies involved.
Marfa has been chosen by Beaux-arts Nantes and HEAD – Genève because of its location, its history and its condition that lies at the core of crucial obsessions, preoccupations and conflicts that are at work in contemporary society. The aim of the program is to engage artists into a singular experience, into a unique relationship with an outstanding environment, and into an intense social research field. The program relies on a collabo­rative network of like-minded international art schools and universities, research-based structures and art institutions.
Residents are selected on the basis of a research project in direct relation­ship with the context, through all its material, historical as well as political dimensions. The thematic focus for 2014 is “borders.” Of six candidates chosen, three are alumni from HEAD Genève and/or les Beaux-Arts de Nantes.

MacArthur Foundation 2013 Documentary Film Open Call

The MacArthur Foundation's Media Program supports the production of documentary films that illuminate human stories within complex social issues. These issues are often critical to our lives, but under-reported in other media. We especially look to fund projects designed to reach a broad audience, particularly in the U.S., through public television broadcast, via community and policymaker screenings, and online.

Each year we accept funding applications through an Open Call process. We typically receive about 400 applications and select 8 - 12 films to receive a grant. Grants are made to production companies and non-profit organizations that are based in the U.S. The typical grant amount is between $50,000 and $200,000.

Over the last 30 years, we have supported over 200 films by some of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers in the country. Their documentary work combines exceptional storytelling with in-depth journalism. Our goal is to support documentaries that will be used widely in educational, community, and policy-making settings over many years, sparking conversations and activities that contribute to social and policy change.

Delfina Foundation is inviting applicants from India and Turkey for the Research Fellowship 2013, which is in partnership with Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) and Goldsmiths College’s Department of Visual Cultures and the PhD Program in Curatorial/Knowledge.
The Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art is supporting a research fellow from India to be in residence alongside a participant from Turkey supported by SAHA. Please note that Indian participants should apply directly to FICA and applicants from Turkey should apply to Delfina Foundation.
The Research Fellowship 2013 aims to provide an opportunity for intensive research in the field of visual culture by curators and researchers who have an innovative visual culture project, and who might benefit from the research and curatorial work that is being done by the fellowship’s partner institutions in London. Artists are welcome to apply; however this residency is largely focused on the development of critical-curatorial discourse, not singularly on artistic practice.
The 2013 recipients will receive:

Journalism Research grant available

Journalists, media scholars and researchers from the Middle East/North Africa region can apply for this research grant in the United States.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Middle East Program announced the 2013 competition, where one candidate from the Middle East and North Africa will be selected to spend three months between September 2013 and May 2014 to carry out his or her own policy-oriented research and writing in Washington.

Interested candidates must be working as reporters, columnists or broadcasters in Arabic media outlets (print, television, radio or electronic media), have at least five years of professional experience and be able to work in both written and spoken English and Arabic. Applicants must be able to hold a valid passport and obtain a J1 visa.
The visiting journalist will receive US$5,000 per month as a stipend and will have to pay roughly one-quarter of the total cost of health insurance.
The applicant should submit a 1,000 word description of a proposed project, a detailed explanation of the research topic relevant to the Middle East and the United States, a CV, a writing sample, two letters of recommendation, and complete application form form to vajpATwilsoncenter.org.

The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department will commission an annual mural competition for the Downtown Arts District. The mural will be located on W. Missouri Avenue, along the north facing façade of the El Paso Museum of History. The mural will be outdoors along Missouri Avenue and viewable to pedestrians and passing traffic. The mural is intended to serve as a lively and inviting visual landmark for the Downtown Arts District. The theme must focus on the arts, be representative of the local art scene, local heritage, and promote the Downtown Arts District.

Eligibility Requirements:
This project is open to artists/ artist teams living within 200 miles of El Paso, Texas.
Artists applying for this project must be over the age of eighteen years old.
Students are eligible to apply only as part of an artist team, that is supervised at all times by a lead artist over the age of eighteen years old.
Recipient must be able to receive payment from the City of El Paso as a legal vendor.
Artist and/or artist teams whom are awarded the commission are ineligible to reapply for two years following last commission.
Submission Requirements:
Letter of Interest: briefly describe your interest and qualifications for this project.
Current Resume: outline your experience as an artist. Artist teams must submit a resume for each member with a one page maximum.
1 image of a past completed mural artwork. Including: title of work, dimensions, medium, year of completion, and a three (3) sentence description. If applying as a team, only one (1) JPEG image can be submitted to CAFÉ.
Prepare verbal, written and visual presentation to show schematic and final artwork proposal. Presentation should include:

UN offers press fellowship on global issues

The United Nations Foundation offers a fellowship with a special focus on the role of the UN, global health and international development and will provide fellows with access to leading experts. Fellows will report on the events and announcements made during UN Week, September 22-25.
This fellowship is designed to foster participants’ understanding of the issues surrounding international development and global health. Special consideration will be given to journalists whose portfolios include global health or foreign affairs.
Applicants must be fluent in English. Fellows are required to participate for the entire duration of the four-day program.

Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award

Journalists from the 42 counties of the Union the Mediterranean who work on cross-cultural reporting are invited to submit their works for the 7th edition of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award until the 30th of June, while the prize will be announced in London, in October 2013.

The Award, which started in 2006, focuses on intercultural issues between and within the Euro-Mediterranean societies, with a special award dedicated to certain theme every year. This year’s special award is dedicated to the theme ‘Arts for Democracy and Social Change’. Besides this special award, there are also four other categories for press, new media, radio and TV.

THE ANTI-ATLAS OF BORDERS

In the frame of the antiAtlas of borders, a call for proposals is launched for an exhibition at La compagnie in Marseille, from December 13, 2013 to March 1rst, 2014.


The curator and the artistic and scientific committee are looking for various proposals (artworks, net. Art, photo, video, testimonies, documentaries, video games…) expressing different ways to experience borders. Proposals from migrants, professionals and artists are welcome, in order to contribute to prepare a resolutely participatory exhibition.


The antiAtlas of borders is a transdisciplinary event that will take place between September, 30, 2013 and March, 1rst, 2014. Bypassing cartography, at the crossroads of research and art, it offers a new approach of the mutations of borders and on the way they are experienced by people in the 21st century.

On 21 March 2013 the IFCD launched its fourth call for funding requests for projects and preparatory assistance requests that aim to foster the emergence of a dynamic cultural sector at the national and/or local level, primarily through activities facilitating the introduction of new cultural policies and cultural industries, or strengthening existing ones.

Since 2010, the IFCD is providing more than USD 3.5 million in funding for 61 projects in 40 developing countries, covering a wide range of areas, from the development and implementation of cultural policies, to capacity-building of cultural entrepreneurs, mapping of cultural industries and the creation of new cultural industry business models.

After the first call for local, where we selected six cultural agents residing in Madrid, now open international call for choosing artists, curators, managers or other non-residents in Spain who want to make an artistic research in Madrid. Each residence will be held for two weeks, between September and December 2013, in one of six private homes selected cultural agents.
Each host will also provide accommodation in the guest room, the possibility of introducing the international resident in the cultural fabric of its closest context . The program covers the cost of accommodation, so that the resident guest should assume travel expenses and support during these two weeks.
