Artist In Residence Program
Badlands National Park
South Dakota
Spring Residency (March 15 and May 15)
Fall Residency (September 15 and November 15)
The Artist in Residence program at Badlands National Park was founded in 1996 and is open to all professional artists. Writers, composers and all visual and performing artists are invited to interpret this wind-swept environment through their work. The program provides time for artists to get away from everyday responsibilities to focus on their surroundings and their medium.
The park offers an apartment located in small housing complex at park headquarters at no cost to the artist. The residency lasts for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six weeks. Additionally, the park provides a reimbursement for expenses not to exceed $300. Reimbursible expenses include supplies for school programs,
travel, or meals. All expenses incurred above $300 are the responsibility of the artist.
Several artists have been successful in seeking donations of supplies and materials from businesses or museums in their home communities prior to coming to Badlands
for their residency, using the reimbursement as matching funds.
Each artist is asked to contribute to the park a mutually agreed upon piece of original work representative of their stay in Badlands National Park within one year of completion of their residency.
Because of Badlands’ strong commitment to education and outreach into our rural school districts, all artists are required to present two sessions in a local school to introduce students to an aspect of art and its interpretation of their Badlands home.
We consider all forms of arts except those that manipulate or disturb the park’s environment or are disrespectful to any race or gender. Selections are made without regard to race, religion, marital status, sex, age, or national origin. The facilities for this program are not wheelchair accessible.
All applicants must submit: (truncated)
1. A resume and summary of creative works.
2. A statement of what they hope to gain from a residency at Badlands National Park and what they hope to incorporate into their classroom presentations.
3. Up to three choices of beginning and ending dates for their residency. Residencies are a minimum of four weeks, a maximum of six weeks, and must fall within the availability dates.

Fire Island Artist Residency (Deadline: Apr 15th, 2013 ) $35 Application Fee

Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) is an organization founded in 2011 that seeks to bring the best gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered emerging contemporary artists to Fire Island, a place long-steeped in GLBT history, to create, commune, and contribute to the location’s rich artistic history. FIAR will offer live/work spaces for selected artists who will participate in a summer residency while immersed in the Fire Island community.
FIAR is dedicated to artists engaged in contemporary creative practices. Leading innovators in contemporary art serve as mentors, living alongside participants and providing them with one-on-one studio visits. These guests also share their experiences with the community through intimate and public lectures and salons. In this way, FIAR hopes to bring both new creative perspectives and prestigious art professionals together in this extraordinary location to foster the creation — and preservation — of queerness in contemporary art.
Located off the south shore of Long Island, a few hours travel from New York City, Fire Island is the home of two historically prominent LGBT communities, Cherry Grove and The Pines. The older of the two, and the home of FIAR, Cherry Grove has evolved from a bohemian theater retreat in the early 1900s to a thriving resort for the LGBT community at large.
Fire Island is the birthplace and inspiration for countless works of art, literature, choreography, and music, and has been host to queer visionaries like Robert Mapplethorpe, Frank O’Hara, Tennessee Williams, W.H. Auden, Edmund White and countless others. Throughout their many changes, Cherry Grove and the Pines have preserved the integrity of the dunes and beaches that have defined this intimate, remote location. There are no roads on Fire Island; raised wooden walkways and footpaths provide a network of paths from homes to beaches to tiny enclaves of shops, restaurants, hotels and bars. Miles of clothing optional beaches and historic woods provide places to explore the richness of this setting and make for exciting places to unwind, and the bars, town centers, and community halls provide plenty of options for meeting locals and visitors from the city.

Bahia, Brazil is a potent place for dancer/choreographers to seek inspiration and knowledge. There are deep traditions in the African-based religions practiced in Brazil, in which dance is considered the incarnation of the gods, the earthly manifestation of the the divine through human movement. These religious traditions challenge and inspire contemporary dance. The island of Itaparica maintains strong manifestations of:
Candomblé, a matrilineal Afro-Brazilian religion practiced throughout Brazil in which individuals in trance dance the movements of the African gods known as orixás;
Egun-gum, a very different patrilineal African cult in which the incarnated ancestors take the form of towering puppet-like figures. The egum tradition emerged from Nigeria and is uniquely practiced in Brazil on the island of Itaparica.
In addition, through this project, selected dancer(s) will be provided additional support in order to participate in:

with participation in the Plataforma Internacional de Dança, an international festival of contemporary Latin American dance, held in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Award for Emerging Photojournalists Now Open for Submissions

PROOF: Media for Social Justice knows that emerging photojournalists want to do meaningful projects related to human rights and social justice issues but often do not have the funds or connections to do so. For this reason, we’re offering an award to help an emerging photojournalist jump-start his or her project by providing funding and support from the media community.
Three awards will be given. First place will receive a $2,500 grant used to finance a photography project that promotes social change and human rights and will be mentored by Ed Kashi from VII. Second and third place will receive mentoring from well-known photojournalists. The top three entries will be shown at an exhibit in the VII gallery in New York City.
This award is for emerging photojournalists. For the purposes of this call for entries, the term “emerging photojournalist” means a photojournalist who has an accomplished body of photojournalistic work that a) has not yet been exhibited or published widely, b) demonstrates a commitment to human rights and social justice issues, and c) does not have agency representation. There are no age or geographic restrictions.

Applications are due by 5 pm, EST, 1 May 2013.

Press Photographer's Foundation Scholarship

The National Press Photographers Foundation has opened its scholarship application period for this year, and you do not have to be an NPPA student member to apply.

The deadline to apply for one of the NPPF $2,000 scholarships is April 15, 2013.
NPPF extended the deadline this year so that students might be able to include new work created during this spring semester in their scholarship application portfolio. A panel of professional photojournalists will judge the applications.
To qualify, students must be enrolled in school during the next fall term to receive a scholarship. Both graduate and undergraduate students may apply.
NPPF scholarships are awarded to encourage those with talent and dedication to photojournalism who need financial help to continue their studies. The awards are directed to students who are studying full-time or who are returning to college.
The Bob East, Reid Blackburn, Bob Baxter, Kit C. King, and Jimi Lott scholarships are endowed by donations from friends, family and news organizations.
The G. Gordon Yoder Television News Workshop Grant was funded by a gift from television news pioneer and former NPPF board member G. Gordon Yoder.
NPPF provides funding for the NPPF Still and Multimedia Scholarship, the NPPF TV News Scholarship, and the College Photographer of the Year International awards through donations from NPPA members. The NPPF Booster Club, made up of NPPA Life members, has provided significant funding over the years.
The scholarship application is online here.

2013 Artist in Residence program - Spiro Arts - Park City, Utah

MAY 13 - JUNE 24th, 2013

APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL, 19th.
Founded in 2007, Spiro Arts Artist in Residence (AiR) program features a diverse community of visual artists, composers, and writers from around the world. The program grants residents the opportunity to live and work as a part of a creative and supportive community, in a beautiful historic setting. Spiro Arts is dedicated to supporting the residents in the creation of new works by offering an environment that promotes risk-taking and innovation. Criteria of selection includes overall quality of work, originality, and potential for growth.

The residencies are fully subsidized: each resident receives shared housing (private room/bath) in a fully furnished condo, ample studio space with 24/7 access, along with a $600.00 (USD) stipend. All residents are responsible for their own food, travel, materials, shipping, specialized tools, and fees for work done outside the premises of Spiro Arts.

New for 2013, in collaboration with Park City Mountain Resort Spiro Arts Artists in Residence will work in a semi-private studio building located within the resorts plaza. The studio is a low-tech and non-equipment-based facility, though basic equipment such as large easels, taborets, and worktables are available.

Spiro Arts encourages interactions with the community, and requires that all accepted residents be prepared to engage the public. Each resident must take part in the Open Studio event at the end of the residency term. The public may be invited to work-in-progress receptions, and studio visits do take place from time to time.

Apply today by downloading the 2013 Artist in Residence application.
