Am I Qualified to Apply for a Grant?

"Am I Qualified to Apply for a Grant?"

It's a question I hear a lot and it is a great question to ask yourself before you invest the time in filling out an application.

The first step is to actually read the guidelines for the grant, fellowship or residency you're interested in. Some have age or geography restrictions. Others are looking for specific types of artists or artwork. Once you have determined that you meet the qualifications you can move forward.

Just because you haven't had a ton of exhibitions or reviews doesn't mean you can't apply. Speaking from my own experience I know for a fact that you don't have to be an art star to get a great fellowship or grant. In fact many institutions are looking for artists who they haven't seen before or who haven't received a grant or residency yet. Never count yourself out because if you don't apply you definitely won't get it.

In my role as a reviewer and juror for fellowships and contests I can tell you that there are a lot of people with terrible, awful work out there who do apply. And I know there are lots of people out there who don't apply who have great work. My advice if you have any doubt about whether you should apply for a particular grant or fellowship is to look up the past winners and/or jurors for that award and ask their advice. Most are usually happy to give it and can provide you with some real insight into what you should do to improve your application.

Most of all just throw your hat in the ring. Do the best job possible on your application but always apply because you just never know!

Call for Proposals. European Urban Media Network 2013

http://medialab-prado.es/article/call_connecting_cities_2013

Medialab-Prado participe on the call for proposal to be developed within the European Urban Media Network for Connecting Cities. This 3-year Europe-wide initiative aim to create a networked infrastructure of urban screens and media facades to circulate artistic and socially relevant content.
This call is aimed at the selection of artistic and sociocultural proposals that use the mediafacades, digital facades and urban screens of the partners of this European network.
Deadline: November 4, 2012
Curated by: Nerea Calvillo

General Approach

Connecting Cities Network aims to create a networked infrastructure of urban screens and media facades to circulate artistic and socially relevant content. The media facades will be transformed into local stages and open a global window for the public audience to create a dialogue and connect the local public virtually with the other places throughout Europe and beyond.
In 2013 through the topic Networked City 2013 will discuss the question of how urban media facades can become a catalyst for shared encounters in an identity-building temporary field of interaction across the borders of time and distance.
The curators of the Connecting Cities Network will select 9 artist projects for the Networked City 2013. These projects will be presented on the urban media facades of the participating cities and open live windows to the cities. The Connecting Cities Events within May and November 2013 will present simultaneously especially developed artists’ projects in all partner cities. The artists’ work will circulate within in the network and connect different cities with each other. All Connecting Cities Events will be followed by a research of audience and community development. The main challenge of Networked City will be to identify contents with relevance on an international level and to develop technology standards by comparing the different local and national circumstances and production conditions.

Entry Rules

Medialab-Prado, as a partner of the project, opens this public call to select at least one project to experiment with and activate the digital facade. The selected author will take part in the European workshop for artists and curators that will take place from Februrary 1 to 4, 2013 in Marseille. The selected project will have to be adapted to at least one more location of the European network.  How can art projects be used to connect the local public virtually with remote places? What are the expectations and visions of our European neighbours? Networked City 2013 intends to connect local neighbourhoods through participatory processes.
Who can apply
This call is for creatores, artists, developers, programmers... either individuals or collectives with the necessary technical knowledge to develop the project autonomously. Should I pay to apply for a residency or fellowship?

"Should I pay to apply for a residency or fellowship?"

It's a question people ask all the time. While I will post lots of calls from lots of places what you won't find very much are calls for artists that you have to pay to enter. Of course there are exceptions but I find that most of the time when a gallery for example has a $65 fee to enter five images it's more about the gallery making money than anything else. Now of course it's tough these days to survive and everyone is trying to make a buck but I find the established and reputable organizations out there don't charge a fee to apply for their grants.

By definition I will be leaving out a lot of stuff but I feel pretty strongly that you shouldn't have to pay to apply for, let alone attend, an artist in residency program.

US National Parks Artist in Residency Programs

Did you know that the US National Parks Service offers several artist in residency programs?
Many parks within the US offer AIR programs so check out a few of these links, many of the deadlines are coming up soon!

Rocky Mountain National Park
http://www.nps.gov/romo/supportyourpark/artist_in_residence.htm
Artists have had a long-standing impact on the formation, expansion and direction of our national parks. Painting the landscapes of the American West, visual artists like George Catlin and Albert Bierstadt focused attention on natural wonders in the western landscape, then unfamiliar to the eastern populace.
These visual records of early artists helped to stimulate the establishment of many of our national parks.
Today, painters continue to document national park landscapes with contemporary approaches and techniques. Writers, sculptors, musicians, composers, and other performing artists also draw upon the multifaceted quality of parks for inspiration.
These artists translate the national park's purpose, as a place of pleasure and preservation, into images which bring others enjoyment and a deeper understanding of the parks many Americans may never visit.
Rocky Mountain National Park's Artist-In-Residence Program continues this tradition.
To download a printable brochure and application, click http://www.nps.gov/romo/supportyourpark/upload/air_2013.pdf

Zion National Park:
http://www.nps.gov/zion/supportyourpark/artist-in-residence.htm
The Artist-in-Residence Program invites selected artists for a four-week period in the fall and spring. The primary residence is a historic house located on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Artists may also use a campsite in Zion Canyon, if preferred. The furnished house is large enough to provide adequate studio space. Artists must be self-sufficient, able to work independently in an isolated environment, and comply with all park regulations and policies.

Grand Canyon's Artist-in-Residence Programs

Whether you are a traditionalist in the vein of Thomas Moran or a contemporary artist creating new paths towards understanding both environmental and cultural issues, you are welcome here. The Artist-in-Residence Program offers professional artists the opportunity to spend three weeks on either the North or South Rim of Grand Canyon in housing provided by the National Park Service. The North Rim AiR program is seasonal, with six residencies during the spring, summer, and fall. The South Rim AiR program is year-round, providing twelve artist opportunities.

Visual arts: painters, sculptors, printmakers, new media artists, muralists, designers, ceramicists, artisans, multi-discipline artists, fiber artists, mixed media artists, jewelers
Media: photographers, film makers, videographers
Writers: fiction and non-nonfiction writers, poets, playwrights
Performing arts: composers, musicians, dancers, performance artists, storytellers, dramatic artists

AiR artist proposals should be site-specific to Grand Canyon National Park, support the park’s Interpretative Themes, and will focus on such issues as ecology, the environment, park advocacy, conservation and other themes relevant to the parks.

Everglades Artist in Residence Program
http://www.nps.gov/ever/supportyourpark/everartistinresidence.htm
Spanning the southern tip of the Florida peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is the only subtropical wilderness in North America. It is known for its rich wildlife, particularly large wading birds, and it is the only place in the world where both alligators and crocodiles coexist.
The Everglades National Park Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) program offers artists the opportunity to live and work in this unique environment for a period of up to one month. The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Everglades National Park. It is hoped that these works will characterize the Everglades for present and future generations, giving park visitors and the general public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes, and ears of the contributing artists.

There are a lot more residencies offered so visit the park serivice's website to explore for yourself!

Free Money? You Don't Say....

For the past few years I've funded my own work through grants, fellowships and residencies aimed at artists and journalist. During that time I've gotten to live and travel to places like Tanzania, Germany, Spain and Slovakia. I've also tried my best to share upcoming deadlines among my friends and collegues.

But all that cross posting is a bit tiresome and of course only reaches the people I happen to know. So I've decided to start this blog as a resource to those of you out there who are looking for some "free money."

Of course nothing's ever truly free so I'll also talk about what it takes to be successful when applying for grants and fellowships and well as where to look. This will be a curated list of resources and deadlines but whenever possible I will try to give you links to places where you can find information on your own.

Let's start with a list of places to look!
